Fasting

In preparation for a Sacred Assembly, a period of fasting and prayer is suggested.

Why should I fast?

According to the teaching Isaiah 58 (NIV), fasting, together with humility and contrition, works on your own spirit to help you become more sensitive to the Lord's voice and leading. Fasting does not change God; fasting changes you.

Are there different kinds of fasts?

Yes, there are three basic fasts:

  1. The Normal Fast: going without any food (solid or liquid); drinking water only.
    (Matthew 4:2 NIV)
  2. The Partial Fast: going without certain foods; usually taking only liquid nourishment or sometimes employing a diet of plain foods: for example, oatmeal, no meats, no sweets. (Daniel 10:1-3 NIV)
  3. The Absolute Fast: going without any food (solid or liquid) or water.
    (Esther 4:16 NIV)

What kind of fast should I do?

The fast you choose is up to you and your physical ability. If you are on medication or have a physical condition requiring that you eat, the partial fast should be your choice. If you are young, healthy, or accustomed to fasting, the normal fast can be your choice. No one should attempt an absolute fast beyond three days.
